Phasing

No diagnostic material culture was recovered from this feature. It cut through the surface 012AD01005, which in its final phase was Anglian in date, and was sealed by material containing Middle Saxon artefacts.

Discussion

It was difficult to assign a type to this feature, as it was located right on the northern limit of the excavation. It may have been part of an elaborate entrance way with enclosure ditches 012AD00511 and 012AD00766. The primary fill was 012AD00610, a dark sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2), containing 5% chalk inclusions. The fill contained a high charcoal content (seven samples were taken). Burnt daub was also present. This was sealed by a much more daub rich fill (012AD00611), a sandy loam (Munsell colour 7.5YR 3/3), with 5% chalk inclusions.

The feature was cut into hillwash and through surface 012AD01005, with a U-shaped profile.
