Phasing

The ditch has been phased to the Middle Saxon period based on stratigraphic relationships. A single Anglian sherd was recovered. As usual in this part of site 12AD, the majority of diagnostic finds were later Roman in date (9 pot sherds).

Discussion

This was a short, wide ditch segment, stratigraphically the latest event in the immediate vicinity. The only fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/2) with 10% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal flecking was noted throughout. Only three cattle and three sheep bones were recovered. The ditch is on the same alignment as feature 012AD00065 to the east, but their character is totally different, and it is unlikely that they were related.

The ditch was cut into hillwash, generally with a V-shaped profile (round-based in places). The angle of the side was steeper on the southern edge.
