Phasing

Although the only diagnostic material recovered were two Romano-British sherds (3 oyster shell were also present), the apparent relationship with slot 012AD00067 to the west indicates an Anglian phase for this slot. No actual stratigraphic relationships were established in the field, although it appears likely that this slot cut through pebble surface 012AD00384..

Discussion

This short east-west oriented slot apparently butts onto the similar north-south aligned 012AD00067, forming part of a small enclosure (or pen?). While not containing the same density of animal bones (18 as opposed to 63), the similar proportions of  sheep/goat, cattle and pig species (55%, 33% and 11% respectively) also indicate a similar date for the infilling of the slots. The fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with up to 15% chalk inclusions.

The slot was cut into chalk, with a U-shaped profile (although this was more irregular in places).
