Phasing

All of the objects from this feature were late Roman in date (five Romano-British pot sherds). This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together a master number 012AD07233). The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of access to the southern part of the dry valley. This slot was cut by the east-west aligned ditch sequence 012AD09136.

Discussion

This slot was immediately to the west of two slots (012AD05812 and 012AD05662) of a slightly different orientation. The single fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3) with 10% chalk inclusions. Occasional daub and charcoal flecking were noted. The animal bone finds were slightly unusual in that three duck bones were recovered.

The slot was cut into hillwash, with a wide-V profile. It was clearly seen to be cut by east-west enclosure ditch 012AD09136.
