Phasing

All of the objects from this feature were late Roman in date (twelve Romano-British pot sherds). This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slots, ditch segments, or lines of posts, with this being one of the short slots (grouped together as master number 012AD07233). The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although the longer features appear to relate to a form of spatial control of access to the southern part of the dry valley. This slot was cut by the east-west aligned ditch 012AD05660. The relationship with ditch 012AD09136 was not established, although it appears almost certain that this slot was cut by 012AD09136.

Discussion

The slot contained a dark (Munsell colour 10YR 3/2) sandy clay loam fill, with between 5-10% chalk inclusions. Charcoal and daub flecking were evident throughout. The fill contained a much higher density of animal bones than any of the others in the immediate vicinity. The species represented were pig, cattle and sheep/goat in almost equal percentages (32%) with a further two domestic fowl bones.

Cut into hillwash with a U-shaped profile. This slot was somewhat deeper than the other slots in the immediate vicinity.
