Pit

Phasing

The pit is unassigned, as no material culture was recovered, and no stratigraphic relationships were established.

Discussion

The pit was filled with a silty clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 5% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecking were noted. The only material recovered from the pit were some small, unidentifiable fragments of animal bone. Of note were some large chalk blocks, which probably originated with the bread oven (012AD07214) to the south. The pit thus post dates the destruction of the oven, and could thus be either late Roman or early Anglian in date.

The pit was cut into fragmented chalk, with a U-shaped profile.
