Phasing

The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of Roman pottery. However, the pit cuts ditch 012AD08341, placing it in either the later Anglian or Middle Saxon phases. It was cut by the elongated pit 012AD05240.

Discussion

This was one of a complex of intercutting pits in the immediate vicinity. It contained a single fill (012AD05213), a sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with 30-40% chalk inclusions (up to 15cm in diameter). Charcoal but no daub flecking were noted.

The pit was cut into the ditch fill, with a flat-based V profile.
