Pit

Phasing

The only diagnostic finds were a later Roman pot sherd and an iron snaffle bit (which could be either Roman or Anglian in date). Also found were nine cockle shells. No stratigraphic relationships with the surrounding features was established.

Discussion

The pit was not fully excavated, although a number of layers were encountered. The first (012AD05274) was a layer of mixed sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) and redeposited chalk fragments (40%) up to 10cm in diameter. Only a single animal bone was recovered from this fill. It was sealed by 012AD05273, another mixed sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with redeposited chalk fragments (40%) larger than contained in the layer below, up to 20cm in diameter. A burnt daub fragment was all that was found in this layer. Next was 012AD05259, a burnt daub deposit containing a single sherd of later Roman pottery. This deposit did not extend across the whole feature. The final fill was 012AD05049, a slightly darker sandy silty loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with few chalk inclusions. This fill contained the majority of finds, including the iron snaffle bit and the cockle shells.

The pit was cut into chalk, although the actual shape and profile of this feature remained elusive.
