Phasing

Although no diagnostic material culture, the ditch segment has been phased to the Middle Saxon period, by association with ditch 012AB00160. No stratigraphic links with the surrounding ditches were established.

Discussion

A linear ditch aligned east/west and defined for 270 cm from a butt-terminal at its western end to the edge of area 12AC. The single fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3). The continuation of the ditch was defined for a further 370 cm by high resolution fluxgate gradiometry between areas 12AB and 12AC, parallel to ditches 012AB07194 to the south and 012AB07198 to the north which form different phases of the same enclosure. The stratigraphic relationship between ditches 012AC00099 and 012AC00114 was not defined by excavation but clearly one is a recut of the other. It is possible that ditch 012AB00160, which lies 940 cm to the east  may relate to 012AC00099, given that they are directly in line with each other.
