Pebble Surface
Phasing
The only finds were four later Roman pot sherds. Stratigraphically, this
surface is the earliest excavated event.
Stratigraphic Matrix Diagram
The matrix above is a simplified extract from the full matrix, showing
only the specific contexts which filled the depression, and their relationship
to the surface which they sealed. The contexts are colour coded into the
four main events which were recognised in the field. To see the full matrix

Discussion
This appears to be an earlier surface than 012AC00022
just to the east, which is higher in the stratigraphic sequence. The surface
itself was not excavated, just cleaned for planning and recording. It consisted
of worn rounded chalk pebbles and in places worn natural chalk. The implication
is that this area was open down to bedrock for some time before the depression
began to fill.
