Surface

Phasing

The only material culture found was non-diagnostic (three sherds of glass and an iron nail). The surface appears to have formed soon after the depression 012AC09503 began to fill, but before the formation of the turf layer in this depression. Also before the turf layer formed, a number of pits (012AC00119, 012AC00122, 012AC00147, 012AC00161 and 012AC00212) were cut through the surface. Another earlier surface (012AC00207) was present beneath the initial filling of the depression, although this was only exposed in a small area. The stratigraphy indicates that the surface formed in the later Roman period.

Discussion

The surface consisted mainly of small rounded chalk pebbles set in a sandy loam matrix (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), compacted by pressure rather than as a deliberate laying of a path. Where the surface became patchy, larger chalk fragments (012AC00022, 012AC00120, 012AC00129 and 012AC00259) were used to repair these "holes". Although surface 012AC00130 appears to cover a large area, in fact the edges of the surface were quite difficult to define, being very patchy in places.
