Phasing

A single Anglian sherd found in the northern segment indicates an Anglian phase for this feature. This has implications for the parallel ditch 012AC00135 just to the east, as this ditch is obviously related, but contains only Roman material.

Discussion

A linear enclosure ditch aligned north/south and forming the boundary of enclosures to the east and west. The northern extent of the ditch appeared to tail off without a clear terminal, possibly indicating that the ditch continued further northwards but has been plough truncated on the chalk natural. The southern limit of the ditch was clearly defined by a terminal 1 metre to the north of ditch 012AC00337.  Ditch 012AC00135 lies immediately to the east on a similar alignment and clearly forms a different phase of the same enclosure; the stratigraphic relationship between the two ditches could not be established during excavation.

The fill was a lighter (Munsell 10YR 4/3) sandy clay loam in the northern segment, and a slightly darker (Munsell 10YR 3/3) sandy silty loam in the south. A single post hole (012AC00394) was defined within the the ditch.

The ditch clearly cut through the lower fills of the depression 012AC09503, although the upper fills were homogenous in nature and difficult to differentiate. These depression fills were unusual in nature, and were classified as turf deposits during the excavation phase.
