Discussion

The stone footing of a round house in the east of area 11CE. Only the east side of the structure survived, no trace of the west side remained. This was the earliest feature in the vicinity and is probably of late Romano-British date. Several features cut through the structure; a Grubenhaus (011CE20005), an enclosure ditch (011CE20011) and its re-cut (011CE00781) and slots (011CE00605 and 011CE00789). The north side of the stone footing over-lay slot 011CE00603 and post hole 011CE00889 (unexcavated) which may have been associated with the structure. The stone footing itself comprised of chalk blocks no larger than 30cm in length in a pea-grit/sandy loam matrix. The wall was set in a small slot no more than 18cm deep cut into pea-grit natural. It is likely that this wall was never much higher than the excavated level, with the chalk acting as post pads on which timber uprights were placed. A small internal setting was also present in the east side (011CE00806), function unknown.
