Medieval Plough Furrows

Discussion

This number deals with the remains of the Medieval ridge and furrow in the western part of site 11. In this area they consist of the remains of 14 north-south aligned furrows, although geophysics shows that they continue to the west and south (in Site 13, not investigated) and to the north (002DC07047). They are separated from the east-west aligned furrows (011BB07055 and 011BC07056) by a Medieval headland, which served to seal and thus protect the earlier archaeology. The furrows were visible in four areas (11AA, 11AC, 11AE and 11BD), although they were only investigated in area 11AC. Only 17 objects and 3 animal bones were recovered from the excavated segments, and it is highly likely that the animal bone (found only in segment 011BD00974) is derived from the curvilinear ditch (011BD07102) just to the north, which is rich in bones. Generally, the finds tended to confirm the Medieval date, with green-glazed and other later Medieval pottery, up to the find of a china clay pipe stem.
