Discussion
An ephemeral track-way that was seen for approximately 113 metres across
the 2D areas. The track disappeared further south due to the increased
truncation of the site on the chalk knoll. A section approximately 11 metres
long was excavated at the south end of the track and two wheel ruts (002DB00120
and 002DB00127) were exposed. The width of the
track is approximately 144cm at this point (110cm wide from centre to centre).
The date of the track was never fully established due to scarcity of
finds but is seems likely that it was of Roman date, possibly to link the
spring area and the Roman structures further to the south/east. The track
would still appear to be in use during the Early Saxon period of the settlement
as the Grubenhauser 002DB00153 and
002DB00166
respect it. It appears to have gone out of use by the time 002DC00101
was built as this structure cuts through the remaining wheel ruts.
