Gully

Phasing

The orientation of the ditch indicates that its origin was in the Medieval period, as it aligns with the ridge and furrow to the south and to the east, and it also appears to stop at the Medieval ditch/gully complex 002DB00075 in the east. However, a number of Post-Medieval drain fragments demonstrate that it continued in use, probably as a ditch field boundary, until the modern field system was laid out.

Discussion

A north-east/south-west aligned gully in the west of area 2DB. The gully continues westwards into 2DC but was only excavated in that area where it cut through earlier features (Grubenhäuser 002DC00032 and 002DC00042). It was visible for a total length of 88 metres. Eastwards, it was not present past the north/south medieval gully complex 002DB00075. Heavy iron panning in the sides and base of this feature confirm its use as a drainage gully.
