Discussion

A penanular ditched barrow immediately west of the stream channel in area 2CA and adjacent to the northern limit of excavation. The features were cut into yellow chalk gravel. The ring ditch was interrupted by an entrance approximately 1m wide, facing north. The ditch terminals were half sectioned, both were rounded and steep sided with the west ditch terminal slightly deeper than the east.

The ovate pit 002CA00844 containing the cremation was roughly centrally placed in the ring ditch. Although evident that this was a cremation pit, the feature was unusual due to the lack of cremated bone present. The central part of the pit was almost free of cremated bone; the majority of the approximately 90 cremated bone fragments were recovered from a small area on the northern edge. The original cremation may have been very shallow and largely ploughed away with the unusual pit fill the result of animal action, or the cremation might have been disturbed in antiquity by a pit dug through the centre. A further explanation is that a substantial post was erected in the pit and the cremated bone scattered around the base. All theories may account for the lack of cremated material recovered.
