Phasing

The only diagnostic material recovered were eight late Roman pot sherds. There were no other stratigraphic relationships. This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Click here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slot or ditch segments, with four lines of posts also following the same alignment. The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although they appear to relate to a form of spatial control of the dry valley.

Discussion

An exceptionally shallow NNW-SSE aligned slot, with quite a high density of finds. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with 7% chalk inclusions. There was daub but no charcoal flecking. The fill also contained an unidentified copper alloy object.

The slot was cut into hillwash, with a very shallow V-profile. The edges of the feature were difficult to define.
