Initially, the pit was cut into chalk, with a flat-based, almost U-profile. The primary fill (012AD00698) was a very dark (Munsell 10YR 2/1) sandy loam, with 5% chalk inclusions. The dark colour was caused by the presence of much charcoal (estimated as about 50% by the excavator). Daub flecking was also present, although no diagnostic material was recovered from this fill. Two secondary fills (012AD00723 and 012AD00693) were present (unfortunately, the relationship between these 2 had been destroyed by 012AD00634). In the west, 012AD00693 overlay 012AD00698. This was a dark (Munsell 10YR 3/2) sandy loam, with less than 5% chalk inclusions. This fill contained no finds, and was overlain by 012AD00692, a very similar sandy loam fill (Munsell 10YR 3/2), also with 5% chalk inclusions. They were separated only because of the occurrence of a very thin line of higher inclusions (not given a number during the excavation phase). 012AD00692 contained a fragmentary fired clay loomweight. In the east, 012AD00698 was initially sealed by 012AD00723. This was a stony (50% small chalk inclusions) sandy loam layer, with a lighter colour (Munsell 10YR 4/2) than the fills in the west. No finds (apart from daub and charcoal flecking) were present in 012AD00723, which was subsequently sealed by 012AD00697, also a lighter sandy loam, but with only 5% chalk inclusions. This fill contained fragments of Niedermendig lava, as well as a mussel shell. This was a mixed fill, with patches of redder material, as well as cess, occurring throughout.
After this, a further pit was cut through all of the fills, down to the level of the charcoal rich layer 012AD00698. This was subsequentlly filled with 012AD00634, an exceptionally stony fill (70% chalk inclusions), a sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 3/2). It was this fill which contained most of the finds, including 2 Roman potsherds and fragments of Niedermendig lava. Some daub but no charcoal flecking was noted.
The pit was subsequently cut by Grubenhaus 012AD07207.
