Phasing

The pit has been phased to the late Roman period by the find of a Roman coin (Theodosius AD 388-402). The pit cut into an earlier pit 012AD05544, and was cut by ditch 012AD09136.

Discussion

The pit was filled with a dark (Munsell 10YR 3/2) silty loam, which was very ashy with a high charcoal content. Some daub flecking was noted. The fill contained 5-10% chalk inclusions ranging from 1 to 7 cm in diameter. The only find was a late Roman coin, although three charcoal samples were also taken. Animal bones recovered proved to be from a number of different species, including domestic geese, pig, sheep/goat, cattle and a single cat bone.

The pit was cut into chalk, with a relatively even U-shaped profile.
