Phasing

Although 9 of the 10 sherds recovered were later Roman in date, the find of a single Anglian sherd gives the filling of this ditch an Anglian date. The Roman sherds, most of which were calcite gritted ware, may have been derived from ?pit/kiln 012AD05106, which contained a high quantity of this type of pottery.

Discussion

Although excavated under a single fill number, the section indicated 3 separate fills, with the tertiary fill having a higher chalk inclusion rate. The fill as recorded was of a fine sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5% chalk inclusions. Only a short segment of the ditch was excavated, as this was right on the western edge of the main excavation area.

The ditch was cut into natural sand, with a flat-based, gentle V-profile.
