Phasing

The only objects recovered from this feature were two non-diagnostic iron objects, one of which was an iron knife which could be either Roman or Saxon in date. However, the primary fill of this feature was a red daub layer, an event which generally appears to happen later in the Middle Saxon period. The feature was cut by ditch 012AD05778.

Discussion

This short ditch segment was on a similar alignment to ditches 012AD05790 and 012AD05778 just to the north. However, it was different in a number of ways to these other two ditches. It was much deeper than the other two (65cm deep) and also contained two distinct fills. The primary fill (012AD09128) was a layer rich in dauby material (Munsell colour 7.5YR 4/3), with chalk inclusions of 10%. Charcoal flecking was also noted. The only finds were two animal bones (one cattle and one sheep/goat). The secondary and final fill was a sandy clay loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/4) with 15% chalk inclusions. Some daub but no charcoal flecking was noted. This fill contained the majority of the finds (both iron objects and sixteen animal bones). The animal bones were evenly split between cattle and sheep/goat (both 44%) with single occurrences of horse and pig.

The ditch was cut into angular chalk with a V-shaped profile.
