Phasing

Two of the three objects recovered were late Romano-British sherds. However, the fill of this feature sealed a number of post holes (012AD08975, 012AD09086 and 012AD9088), all of which were interpreted as being part of post hole line 012AD07200. If this is the case, then the ditch must be Anglian or later in date. This is one of a number of features which have the same alignment Clich here to see a colour coded plan of the different alignments of features, following the line of the dry valley in a NNW-SSE orientation. These features are all either short slot or ditch segments, as well as four lines of posts also following the same alignment. The significance of these features is not yet fully understood, although they appear to relate to a form of spatial control of the dry valley.

Discussion

The single fill was a sandy silty loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with very few (3%) chalk inclusions. No daub or charcoal flecking was noted. Although only a few objects were recovered, thirty-three animal bones were found. These were predominantly cattle bones (64%) , followed by sheep/goat (33%), with a single domestic goose bone also found. The ditch apparently butted oup onto ditch 012AD05790 in the south, as it was not seen further beyond this to the south

The ditch was cut into hillwash and down to a pebble surface, with a flat-based U profile.
