Phasing

This feature was the earliest excavated feature in the immediate vicinity (although segment 012AD00855 did cut through pebble surface 012AD00882). All of the 9 diagnostic sherds recovered were of a later Roman date.

Discussion

This was an unusual feature, cut by all of the other ditches in the area. It has a number of similarities with feature 011CD07116 , including the shape, and the apparent lack of all of the sides to make a full enclosure. It is possible that ditch 012AD00514 is also related to this feature, but this could not be proven, as all of the north-south aligned ditches completely cut away the enclosure at this point.

The fill was a uniform sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/2), with between 5-10% chalk inclusions. Daub and charcoal were noted in both excavated segments. The ditch was cut into hillwash with a flat-based U profile.
