Slot

Phasing

This slot cut through both ditches 012AD07219 and 012AD08171. Although containing only later Roman pottery, the find of Niedermendig lava, though not conclusive, indicates an Anglian date for the feature. An undiagnostic whetstone was also recovered.

Discussion

A short, linear slot which was the latest event in its immediate vicinity. It may be connected with a number of similar slots Plan of the later slots  which apparently sub-divide the larger enclosure. The fill was a medium sandy loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3), with 10% chalk inclusions (0.5-1.5cm in diameter). There was no daub or charcoal flecking. The slot was cut into sand and gravel with a flat-based, gentle V profile.
