Discussion

The pit was very distinctive on the ground due to the high percentage of charcoal and charcoal flecking contained in the fill. The majority of this charcoal derived from the primary fill, which completely covered the base of the pit. Animal action was responsible for moving the charcoal up into the secondary fill of the pit (012AD08188) and the ditch fill above (012AD08326).

A pig mandible and 3 sheep bones were recovered, all from the secondary fill, these all being unburnt, and thus unrelated to the charcoal deposit.
