Pit

Phasing

The pit has been phased to the Anglian period by the find of the end and side plates of a single sided composite bone comb. Because of the unusual nature of the finds (three slag fragments were visible on the surface) from this feature, the second half was removed after the section was drawn, to recover all of the material from the pit. The pit cut through the eastern end of enclosure ditch 012AD07228.

Discussion

The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3), with 5% chalk inclusions. Some daub and charcoal flecks were noted. This pit contained a number of unusual finds, as well as the diagnostic Anglian bone comb fragment. Six lumps of slag were found (five of which were smithing by-products, with one iron working by-product), one large lump having replaced organic material (?straw) on its underside. One of the other finds was a stone, with crude grooves (possibly a hone stone, though not of the usual variety). The animal species recovered were predominantly sheep/goat (58%), followed by cattle (24%). Also present were pig, horse and domestic fowl.

The pit was cut into angular chalk, and had a U-profile in the south, with a shallow V-profile in the north.
