Phasing

This ditch segment has been phased (by stratigraphic relationships) to the Middle Saxon period, despite only containing Roman diagnostic material. It is possible that, with segments 012AD00831 and 012AD00740 to the north, this is part of a segmented ditch, extending to the south Click here to see the interpreted segmented enclosure ditch  from ditch 012AD00918. Generally, all of these wide, short segments appear to be late in the sequence of events on the site.

Discussion

The single fill was a very slightly redder than usual (Munsell colour 7.5YR 3/2) sandy clay loam, with less than 10% chalk inclusions. Some daub and charcoal flecking was noted. Most of the animal bone recovered was sheep/goat, although a total of only nine bones is a much lower density than similar feature 012AD00740 just to the north. The section indicates that a primary fill with a higher chalk inclusion rate was excavated under this fill number.

The ditch segment was cut into hillwash, with a flat based, shallow-V profile.
