Phasing

Phased to the Anglian period based on stratigraphic relationships, this feature was cut by ditch segment 012AD00740. The only diagnostic material recovered were three late Romano-British sherds.

Discussion

A short segment of enclosure ditch, this was a small segment of one of at least four phases of the southern enclosure (the other three being 012AD07212, 012AD07210 and 012AD07050). The single fill was a dark (Munsell colour varying between 10YR 3/2 and 10YR 3/3) sandy clay loam with 5% chalk inclusions. A little daub and charcoal flecking was noted. As only two small segments were excavated, and the feature was so shallow, very few finds were recovered.

The ditch was cut into hillwash with a U-shaped profile.
