Phasing

Of the nine objects recovered, six were late Roman or Romano-British pot sherds. The remaining objects (two copper alloy sheet fragments and an iron pin) were unfortunately undiagnostic. The ditch cut through ditches 012AD05790 and 012AD09129.

Discussion

This was the latest of three ditches with the same ENE-WSW orientation (with 012AD05790 and 012AD09129). It was filled with a sandy clay loam (Munsell 10YR 4/3) with 10% chalk inclusions. Both daub and charcoal flecks were noted. Of the animal bones recovered, the majority were sheep/goat (67%), followed by cattle (29%). A single cat bone was also present.

The ditch was cut into angular chalk natural, with a wide-V profile. The ditch appears to butt onto slot 012AD05774 in the west, as there was no evidence that it continued further to the west.
