Discussion

This short slot roughly follows the east-west oriented ditch 012AD07227 one metre to the south, although it appears to be curvilinear rather than straight. Plough truncation was quite severe, and it was felt during excavation that the slot probably had extended further to the east (indicated by a series of dents in the chalk natural). The fill was a quite dark (Munsell 10YR 3/3) sandy loam, with 10% chalk inclusions and no charcoal flecking. The only diagnostic find was a single sherd of 4th century Romano-British pottery. Some large fragments of daub were also recovered.

The slot was cut into chalk, generally with a V-profile, although one segment had a flat-based U-profile. It also cut through layer 012AD00055, a deposit which overlay pebble surface 012AD00054. The slot did not cut through the pebble surface.
