Phasing

The only diagnostic find was a single later Roman pot sherd. However, the stratigraphy and the fact that the enclosure apparently swerves to avoid the group of two Grubenhauser to the west indicate an Anglian date.

Discussion

A curvilinear ditch aligned east/west and forming the latest phase of an enclosure to the north. Further ditches (012AC00033, 012AC00035 and 012AC00041) on a similar alignment lie to the north 012AC09502, which form different phases of the same enclosure. The western limit of the ditch has been truncated by Grubenhaus 012AC09506 and the ditch was not defined to the west of the Grubenhaus, which might indicate the termination of the ditch but alternatively it may have been destroyed through plough truncation on the chalk knoll. The eastern end of the ditch curves north-eastwards and narrows before terminating adjacent to the butt-end of ditch 012AC09501, which almost certainly formed the eastern boundary of the same enclosure. The ditch was also shown to cut pits 012AC00079 and 012AC00189.
