Discussion

This ditch is the earliest cut of a large, curvilinear enclosure ditch in the west of the excavation area, excavated in areas 11AE and 11CE. The ditch was re-cut twice, by 011CE00697 and then by 011CE07097. The excavated sections were joined based on geophysical surveying results. The main details of the enclosure ditch are present in the latest cut document (011CE07097) as, despite evidence of the earlier cuts in the 11AE excavations, it is not possible to isolate the individual re-cuts. The ditch is likely to be of Roman date and could be associated with enclosure 011CE20010 to the east.
