Pit

Phasing

The pit is Middle Saxon in date, based on the find of a ninth century styca (Eanred 810-841) as well as a sherd of Middle Saxon pottery.

Discussion

This is one of 3 pits (with 011AB00888 and 011AB00307) in the immediate area which has Middle Saxon pottery within its fill. Situated to the south of a Middle Saxon post-in trench structure (011AB10013), they may be refuse pits associated with this structure, although no animal bones were found in this pit.
