Phasing
This phase of the enclosure system proved to be vital in establishing the
sequence of events in this area, as a number of stratigraphic relationships
were clearly visible in the field, both pre and post dating this phase.
In the extreme north-east, the enclosure both cuts through an earlier ditch
and is subseqently cut by an Anglian slot. In the south, this phase of
the ditch was demonstrated to cut through the earlier phase (Master 011AB10004).
The ditch is also cut by the large quarry pit (Master 011AB10006).
It is also claimed that the wider section in the north-east (ditch segments
011AB00065 and 011AB00066)
are cut by a ploughmark (011AB00014/15).
Some of the material from this plough furrow may well be derived from the
ditch fill.

Discussion
The outer enclosure ditch is the final of the three main phases of this
large enclosure system, all of which extend up to the stream channel to
the east. Due to the excavation technique of issuing a different fill and
cut context number for each excavated segment of ditch, the sheer number
of contexts issued (59 fill numbers) has necessitated a different technique
for dealing with the catalogue entry for this phase of the enclosure ditch.
Separate HTML documents have been created for the animal bone, object and
context entries. These are accessed in the normal way by clicking on the
relevant link, and then you can return to this document either by the links
provided in the secondary document or by clicking on the "back" button
in the menu structure at the top of the page. Also, as it is difficult
to see which segment of ditch you are clicking on from the plan above,
a click will zoom you in to a close up of the northern
and southern sections of the enclosure, where
each cut number issued will be numbered in red.
This phase of the enclosure system contained many more objects than
animal bones (ratio 63:37) than the other 2 phases of the system, which
were both near a 50:50 ratio. The area enclosed was 3303 sq. metres, making
this the largest of the three phases of enclosure.
