The daub wall (011CE00553) was oval in shape and preserved up to a height of 21cm with an maximum width of 6cm. The south side of the daub wall was visible before excavation and many large blocks of stone were embedded in the burnt daub debris in the centre of the structure. These included chert 6-8cm in size, a block of oolitic limestone 19cm in length and a quern fragment (millstone grit) approximately 38cm by 23cm. The centre of the structure and the collapsed debris were excavated (011CE00917) with the centre being taken down to pea-grit natural.
The removal of debris from the outside of the structure revealed 18 post and stake holes, all undoubtedly associated with the structure. The south/west side of the structure was partially obscured by a baulk but, nevertheless, no standing wall was ever established in this area. It is possible that the structure had three sides of daub-rich material but the south/west side was of a different construction, probably timber. A stone setting (011CE00755) in the south/west side is probably associated with the daub structure as many of the chalk stones were burned and burnt daub was present in quantity in the soil matrix. These stones may indicate the extent of the structure and may have been foundations or packing for the south/west side. The setting lay on the surface of the north/south arm of a redundant enclosure ditch (011CE20009) of probable Roman date.
The date and function of the structure has not yet been established. Although the structure can be reliably dated post-Roman (see above), no material dating evidence remained. The material within the structure (011CE00917) was removed and floated (details of the results to come). The signs of large scale burning is most likely to have been the result of the structure burning down rather than evidence of its function. Further analysis of the contents may confirm a hypothesis that the structure was used for grain-storage/drying.
