Pit

Phasing

The pit was phased as Middle-Saxon by a copper alloy pin-pair and chain dress fastener.

Discussion

The fills of the pit contained an unusual selection of animal bones, including bones from 3 different bird species. Both fills were charcoal rich (Munsell colour 10/YR/42), with the primary fill (011CD05344) containing some 30% chalk inclusions (0.5-2cm in diameter) and the final fill 25% inclusions (0.5cm-3cm in diameter). After the primary fill, a slumping of the sides occurred (011CD05387), before the final deposit (011CD05228) filled the pit. The pit was cut into hillwash, and was slightly undercut near the surface (ie the cut of the pit was wider than the top surface area at a 10cm depth). Of special note is the Middle Saxon copper alloy pin-pair A photograph showing the pin-pair in situ.  found in the final fill. The pins were joined together with a copper alloy chain appoximately 8cm in length (33 links). The chain showed an obvious repair, with a section of coarser links near one end. The pit was initially half sectioned, before being excavated in full to recover the pin-pair. No further diagnostic objects were found in the northern half of the pit.
