Discussion

A sub-rectangular raised hearth in the north/west of area 11BD. The hearth lay over a NW/SE aligned slot (011BD00565 see the photograph of the section, Photograph of the section through 011BD00527). The structure had a high ash content and an area of red clay in the centre. The stones comprised of chalk blocks, ironstone and red sandstone in a dark sandy silty loam matrix. No finds were associated with the structure. The hearth may be associated with a possible post hole structure (master 011BD07067) although the amount of post holes in the vicinity make the interpretation of structures difficult.
