Discussion

This was the initial machine stripping of the ploughsoil in Area 11AE. There proved to be only a thin layer of soil across most of the area, which had an underlying geology of frost-shattered chalk. Only in the south-eastern part of the area was there a layer of hillwash, the easternmost part of which was subsequently excavated in 1991 (Area 11BE) and 1992 (Area 11CE). Before the initial cleaning of the remaining ploughsoil (spit 011AE00002) took place, an attempt to clean the surface by using a tractor-driven brushing machine proved fruitless, and the remaining cleaning was carried out by hand. Very few finds were lifted under this number, the majority being lifted under cleaning spit 011AE00002, although a bird bone, a brooch and a silver sceatta were lifted for safekeeping.
